The Assembly of the Republic has officially approved the establishment of National Cobblestone Day and Portuguese Pavement Day (Dia Nacional do Calceteiro e da Calçada Portuguesa), to be celebrated annually on July 22nd.
This resolution, passed unanimously and published in the Diário da
República, represents a historic step in protecting one of the most
distinctive elements of Portugal’s urban landscape and culture.
The
choice of July 22nd is deeply symbolic: it marks the day in 2021 when
the "Art and Know-how of Portuguese Pavement" was officially inscribed
in the National Inventory of Cultural Intangible Heritage.
The main objective of this initiative is to dignify and valorize the profession of the calceteiro—an
art that requires mastery, technique, and sensitivity, but currently
faces challenges due to an aging workforce and a lack of generational
renewal. By creating this national day, the Portuguese State commits to
promoting the training of new artisans and ensuring that this
traditional "know-how" is not lost.
Beyond
the professional aspect, this annual celebration aims to raise
awareness for the conservation of the pavement as an artistic and
cultural asset. Iconic patterns such as the "Mar Largo"
(Wide Sea) in Rossio Square, or the caravels and compass roses
decorating Portuguese squares, are now recognized as priority heritage
to be safeguarded.
This parliamentary decision also serves as a fundamental pillar in supporting the bid for Portuguese Pavement to become a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity,
reinforcing the international prestige of this unique art form that
originated in Lisbon in the mid-19th century and now shines across the
globe.
